*Spoiler*
There is a lot to discuss about the book ending of Vol. 6. It was definitely a “Watchmen situation” where the book ending would just not work on film, but unlike Watchmen, the crazy book ending has some real significance to the plot, particularly in the development of Gideon as a character.
Seeing the frozen bodies of Gideon’s ex-girlfriends, all of whom had rejected him, makes the reader realize that Gideon is just like Scott. They both have this dirty laundry list of former relationships, but Scott chooses to clean his up.
The main theme of the series is “Scott Pilgrim grows up”, and characterizing Gideon as the polar opposite makes Scott’s journey feel more powerful. Up until that sixth volume, Gideon and Scott are one in the same, but the movie viewer never gets that because in the movie version, Gideon is a shallow character who cannot be compared to Scott.
